Yesterday I took a day out and visited the Garden House not far from Tavistock in Devon. It's on the western edge of Dartmoor in a sheltered valley. In spring it has good displays of Rhodendrons, Camillias and Magnolia. Although spring is the main season it is well worth a visit at any time it is open. It has a fairly formal walled garden and lawns near the house (good food), with a more informal woodland area and Jubilee arboretum.
Below are a few pictures to give an idea of the place.

That's the attraction of the place: the crowds.
Seriously though I have never been there when it was crowded, the tea room can get full.

Well, visited a few days ago, and it is quite lovely. Apart from the walled garden, my favourite spot was towards the top of the (as yet immature) arboretum, sat in a seat looking back down over the large pond and landscape beyond.
I would like to take the opportunity to recommend a wonderful house and garden, 'Coleton Fishacre'. Sadly, no pics, and we were in a bit of a rush as we had booked a parking spot at 'Greenway', Agatha Christie's holiday home, but this is an absolute 'must see', especially for you National Trust members. We'll be going back next year to see it properly.
