Watering the garden- environmental dilemma

Much though I admire your sentiment the water you don't use is not being shipped off to sub-Saharan Africa or any place else that needs water. I use tap water on my plants but donate to Water Aid. That way I feel my use of water is not extravagant.

 

I remember using the bath water on the garden in 1976.

 

The way i see it, I can't do much for people in other countries that don't have water. Like in Brazil they're going to run out of water sometime but they still cut down their rain forest that will cause climate change across the world and people digging up their front garden just to put a car on it, 2 have gone in these last few weeks.

 

Been that long, has it? Thought something around here smelt peculiar!

Yes of course I fully agree that any water I don't use doesn't benefit those people in need in other countries.
Likewise people saying that they can't do or change things ,still doesn't sit right with me. I can't justify using the world's most precious and important commodity in such a selfish way...that is me personally. I would rather my unused water go to areas directly in need of it here on my own doorstep. It's very much needed in the agricultural sector for one thing.
It's no good looking at what our neighbours are doing wrong....we have to look closer to home and do right ourselves. If everyone did their bit and save a bit on water wastage.....if everyone joined forces in a combined effort, what a better better world we'd have.
When all is said and done there are no excuses, no matter how small and insignificant it may seem we all have a part to play.

 

I agree ... but that is a mighty big IF which we can only dream about.

 

Sorry just seen the reference to the deforestation of the rainforest!! Your part could in supporting the people who desperately need the work, ensuring you avoid all palm oil etc,etc. The list is endless,you just have to be bothered enough to look.


Vicky sadly I have to agree, it seems a shame that it's become such a huge IF and that people don't see it as they're automatic responsibility to leave this world in a better condition than they found it in.

 

and just how many people enriched that water before the garden got it

I use rain barrel water as much as possible but do have to admit that city water does the bulk of the watering over the summer.

True @shiney but I did acknowledge the point about conserving water here wouldn't directly effect drought areas, I said I would rather it get to needy areas within my locality.

When all is said and done it comes down to personal consciousness....

 

My bug bear is this ... Algarve is a small Province and there are nearly 50 golf courses watering their lawns rain or shine. They have boreholes taking it from the substructure of the earth which affects land far from their space. Do they care the country is in a desperate situation ... not one iota! I don't believe that those hundreds of thousands of golfers care about conserving water wherever they come from ... and if they do, they are hypocrites in my opinion.

Some non-essential agricultural businesses have been told to cut back. I don't know what the Governments view is on golf courses.

 

And Football Stadiums, Cricket Grounds ......Wimbledon too!!
