After work, I finally gave in and sprayed my roses for aphids, using an eco-friendly solution (SB Invigorator).

A couple of sources online were urging gardeners to avoid that, promising that natural predators would take care of them eventually. It didn't happen in my case unfortunately, after several weeks.

To stop carrot fly you need to cover carrots with horticultural fleece as the fly is tiny and can easily get through netting.

You can also grow leeks around them, the smell is supposed to confuse and obscure the carrot smell to the flies

At last, I have started my spraying project. I could only keep going for one 5ltr. container of spray, it was so heavy to carry around. Frustratingly, I could not reach the gap between my neighbour's fence and the bank where the brambles are growing from, so I am going to have to go around and tackle it from her side, over the top of her fence. I haven't worked out the logistics yet, I am not sure there is enough room for me to put up my step ladder as she has a huge, heavy wooden garden swing seat on the decking. I do not fancy prancing around along the top of the bank.
I think I am going to have to wait a few more days before spraying an area around the end of the workshop as a pair of great tits were very busy flying in and out of a nest box on the end of it. The babies must be nearly ready to fledge at the rate the parents are feeding them, every few minutes. The parents scolded me when I was planting the potatoes near them.
I sowed some radish and spring onions in a trough, hoping to sow peas and sweet peas
            today.
Must top up the pond again. Spraying the back steps and paths are on the agenda today.
I have never grown pot onions but I have one seedling survivor which I discovered yesterday, it has grown so well I might pot it on. I think it is a method used by exhibition onion growers trying to win the biggest onion competitions in shows. Not that my puny specimen would get a look in.

Great, I have a roll of horticultual fleece in the shed, which I haven't used, as I never wrap anything in fleece to protect from frost, as it defeats the object. So I do have fleece, I would have thought it be too fine though, can I water through it. How do I secure the fleece to the containers? I was thinking Clothes peg, but thinking the carrot fly will get around the side, so maybe not ideal!

Now you see it, half gone and all gone. Very strange to not see it there any more but I expect we'll get used to it. Much more sunshine in our garden so we're pleased. 20250507_163730.jpg 20250508_150007.jpg 20250507_163730.jpg 20250508_150007.jpg 20250507_163730.jpg 20250508_150007.jpg 20250509_122320.jpg 20250509_122320.jpg

You can use clothes pegs make sure that the fleece is tucked under the lip of the container, could use string for that as well, have to take it down the sides to water, I'm not convinced that the water will go through it.

A few days ago i planted some red wild poppies, had to put stones around them because of the foxes or black birds.

I think it will @Butterfly6, our veg beds have always struggled our side of the fence and my roses will get more light. Best of all, the roosting pigeons won't be pooing every day all over my potting table which was underneath!

Looking forward to going to Malvern tomorrow.

Our posts must have crossed @Logan, that looks good. I bought a tiny red saxifrage yesterday at Gardening Club but haven't worked out where to plant it yet - we need some rain as well.

The tree chopping looks impressive @lizzie27 . I'm sure you will appreciate the extra sunshine in your garden.

I'm not gardening at the moment because we are on holiday in Cornwall. We went to St Michael's Mount today. I'll post some photos on the Garden Visits thread.
