A couple of weeks ago I sowed a packet of wild flower seeds I had been given which have now mostly germinated in small pots. I don't recognize any of the seedlings, although possibly some might be clover, others just look like grass? Is this to be expected if seed was collected from a meadow?
There's no flower list on the packet so who knows what I've got!

Seeds are continuing to pop up, very satisfying.
I finally sowed my runner beans, two lots, one for myself and the others for my daughter. Also sowed the sweetpeas. I was shocked to find you now buy 24 seeds for the price you used to spend on 100. I also sowed French Beans, peas and Mange Tout. Now I have to finish clearing the veg. patch my son cleared of weeds to have somewhere to plant them all. I have lost my rhubarb, the ground is just too dry, I have tried 3 varieties over the years but they have all disappeared.
The piece of culinary ginger I potted up several weeks ago still isn't moving much. The decorative ones in the garden haven't appeared yet but it is much colder outside. I never remove last years stems, I always let the new growth push last years growth off, as protection from winter cold and wet etc. It does look untidy but seems to work. I will persevere and wait, patiently.
I washed the weed matting from the greenhouse in diluted Jeyes Fluid and let it drip dry on the washing line. Just a few of the slabs to wash then I can put everything back, ready for this years crop of tomatoes etc.

Weeded a pathed area near the pond. Sowed some corn poppies in the cracks and watered them in.
Then had a go at weeding between the spinach america and beetroot. Again like concrete. We tackled the nettles and goosegrass in between the rhubarb and loganberry. The chiff chaff kept us entertained on the spruce tree. We then moved behind the loganberry to carry on and all hell was let lose. The chiff chaff was jumping around coming really close to us and making non stop alarm calls. Yes you've guessed. We made a retreat and immediately the alarm calls stopped. Where the nest is we don't know but we must have been too close. Hope the goosegrass doesn't take over.

Scissors is the only thing for the Phormiums aren’t they @Plantminded. Do yours flower? Mine have about 6 flower spikes each.

I’ve potted-on more sunflowers of the tall ones so can go out once they’ve filled the new pots.

Help, I have been abducted by hostile aliens and replaced with an imposter :yikes:

It all started yesterday when we were out of the house by 9am on a Saturday, going for a long walk and a nip to the garden centre, continued today when I washed the French windows outside before building my new through against it, and culminated on putting things to their places and sweeping the patio.

Clearly this is not me. Perhaps it's "The Change" all the magazines and my female friends talk about

Anyways, today is very overcast so no walking lures. We had a silly step in front of the French window we never use as a door, half concreted but extended with loose bricks.

Since I succumbed to some new alpines yesterday at the garden centre, today the loose bricks became a wall, some root membrane went in to keep the soil from leaking out, some plastic against the wall (I don't want to water my walls) and here is the new alpine through:

            throughout.jpg

I put Thyme in the silly holes on the side, we'll see how they fare. I'll let everything settle down a bit and then let The Child loose to add stones and gravel and arrange everything artfully. :)

The thing I like is that the plants are about the level of the window so I can look at them from my favourite kitchen chair.

Whilst on drought tolerant plants, the Violas gave their last hello to make room for my Sempres:

            sempres.jpg

My pots on the south- west facing side of the patio are slowly transforming from emergency accommodation station towards plants I want there.

I bought a potful of Bay yesterday and suspect a junior worker got sick and tired of lollipops and just chucked the rootings all in one pot.

I dislike lollipop Bays so was happy with my £4.99 potful, and on potting it up discovered that all of the 20 or so strong stems are individual plants.

I potted the majority up together, but prised off four plants to try my hand on  growing lollipop Bays

Yes, scissors work best @AuntyRach. One of mine has two flower spikes at the moment. It gets the most sun, the others may follow. I only allow the spikes that are upright to remain, or nearly upright, as I don’t like them to look as if they’re falling over .

It was dull and cool this morning, but this afternoon - what a change!!
That got me out in the garden, rapidly trying to fill the last corners of the garden waste bin. Pick up tomorrow!!
I think my garlic are dying. At least the snails didn't get to my chard overnight.
Sieved some of our first homemade compost from our new garden yesterday. Note to self - must turn it more often.

Well I never! The first green shoot has appeared in the ginger pot. I did warn it if it didn't buck up its ideas up it was going to be used in a curry, amazing what a little strong chat can do.
My back stopped me from doing much, I took the weed matting down to the greenhouse and washed the remaining slabs. Weeded a trough and straightened some metal bean poles. Found some pots for potting on young plants and watered the conservatory. That was my lot.

Annual forget-me-not pulling-out is ongoing. They're going over early this year, I assume due to the drought.

I gave my defender courgette seeds a stiff talking to, and 2 have appeared.
Despite a broken arm, I now have all tomatoes in situ, tubs planted, chillies a bit slow'
My physio now consists of hoeing.
                      There's a lot to do.

So this one, I have sown more carrots in, the bonus being this is 45cm off the ground, so carrot flies cannot get to them.

In the 3 metal buckets, I have sown some spring onions. Last year these failed, so this year moved them out front to a sunnier front garden. Fingers crossed. In the big containers I have some more carrots, I will need to cover these with horticultural fleece.
                        I upload_2025-5-19_19-25-8.jpeg

Bouught container from Lidls, sold as a herb garden and that is exactly what I have done. Six different types of herb and I haven’t even got any mint. So will buy some seeds and sow in a separate pot. Are herbs like lettuce and are cut and come again.
                        upload_2025-5-19_19-25-8.jpeg

Here some unexpected potatoes have grown, next to purpose harvested. So I have let them grown and see what happens.

Also not shown I have sown some lettuces.

So looking forward to some nice salads.

Had a really good day in the garden. Weeding, weed killing, potting on, sowing. Can barely move this morning but at least I did something.
Watering and sweeping up next. Plus more weed killing and putting everything back in the greenhouse.
Seedlings popping up at a rate of knots, now have 9 sweetcorn, a marrow and courgette plus 3 mini melons. The chillies are just about ready to be potted on again, also the tomatoes.

A busy morning here for us. Planted out some more dwarf french bean seedlings. Weeded around the swiss chard. Yet again sowed some beetroot seeds in between ones that have germinated. Planted out the dismal amount of leek seedlings and then continued the row with seeds. Weeded around the pea beans and then sowed some more in and around. Decided to give it a go as we aren't having success this year in the tunnel....so a row of carrots sown outdoors. I know many of you will wonder why this is an issue but for years we haven't had any germination outdoors and packets have been sown. So trying again.
Weeded what we call the narcissi bed. Very difficult as the ground is concrete.
Harvested some more strawberries, radishes and spring onions.
Need to look up the young shoots of yams...can we eat them?

Cutting grass front yard only. First cut of the season. Pulled some weeds yesterday. Gave away a bunch of Hardy Geraniums yesterday to a neighbor. Then going to Vote, then grocery shop, then meeting up with someone to buy an object she liked on Facebook Market place. Two things sold this week.
