Doing a great job there @Retired. It should be getting well established by next summer.
Heathers are good for a winter/spring display @Logan, but they'll spread, so you'll need more room for them next year, or plant them out.
I did the same recently with acorns @Bluejayway - no idea why, although I think it may have been because of an G's World item. I'll have to donate them to the NT garden along the road if any of them take, assuming the tree rats don't remove them. I have enough trees -no room for an oak!
Nothing done in the garden yesterday apart from bird feeding. I was lucky that it was dry for my walk and it just started raining as I got back in. I had a lot of other things to deal with in the afternoon so was inside.
Nothing today either-I'll be lucky to get a walk without getting wet this morning, and then it'll be inside due to the storm coming in. Warnings for floods as well as 60 mph winds/rain here, but we don't get much bother with flooding in the immediate area. 80 and 90 mph winds further north and west, so hope everyone up there has their hatches well battened, and their battens hatched...

Yesterday was a day of swearing at recalcitrant bits of metal and also at the two (now ex)small snails that ate the single flower bud on the Dahlia coccinea var palmeri that has developed so far.

Got to the Allotments yesterday, just to harvest a few things, as I didn't want to be out too long. I was reflecting on the irony of picking Autumn raspberries whereas the Blackberries were over weeks ago.
Might get something done in the greenhouse, but the rain/ drizzle is persistent if not heavy.

            Hi,

Friends have just departed; 100 mile journey back home for them in heavy wind driven rain; it's like a black hole as I type but I'm pleased Yorkshire is back to normal apart from the rare hosepipe ban which is still in force.

            Kind regards, Col.

Too wet outside to do anything so I brought the bird feeders in to strip down, wash and refill. I'll bring them back in later before the wind picks up so I don't have to scout the neighbourhood tomorrow for them.

I was shifting the water from the butts by the greenhouse into the empty water butt connected to the greenhouse*. It got around 10l of water.
That's all I did apart from the daily check what my plants growing from seeds do.

                * With the drought 2022, the ground never was the same again. It had moved the greenhouse 3 cm down where the door is. Since then, I collect the water in two 75l butts standing next to the door and shift it into the butt on the other end.

                  Hi,

I had a rude awakening this morning at 5:30; powerful wind was banging something around outside causing concern so I got up to investigate. All I found were two pyramid boxwood topiary trees in their plastic planters being blown around on the patio; much to my relief I couldn't see anything else amiss.

                  Pyramid boxwood._493.JPG
These are now placed safely out of the wind. The water dish as usual has a layer of leaves and my little friend Gems a neighbours cat was awaiting his breakfast. Picture just taken in an excuse of daylight.

It's a typical Yorkshire day; wet; windy; dark and miserable so indoor activities only; it's a good day to enjoy a prolonged violin practice. :yahoo:

                  I hope everyone's safe.

                  Kind regards, Col.

Glad you didn't have any real damage there @Retired . I had everything well secured or moved early yesterday as we were expecting 60 plus mph winds. Nothing looks trashed so I must have done well enough. I'll wait until tomorrow to move things back.
There was a bit of tree down on our main road when I went to collect my daughter from work. That was at half nine, and by the time we came back twenty minutes later, the council chaps were there clearing it. Impressive - 9.50pm on a Friday night
Our side road will still look green rather than black today with all the bits that have come off the trees, but we got off lightly - no power cuts or flooding etc.
Won't be anything happening in the garden today as it's still to be wet and windy, although more normal winds of high 40s and 50s. I'll have to time my walk to avoid getting drookit - I was quite lucky yesterday. 43.5mm in the rain gauge this morning, in less than 24 hours, which I think is the most since I got the gauge.

Meant to say @Logan - just go with your gut when it comes to repotting or moving your heathers. They can grow at such different speeds, and you'll just have to see how much they've established and whether one is crowding another etc. It would be a shame if you lost one due to that.

Just been out to check the gardens alright after the winds. Yep all still there no branches down shed and greenhouse fine. Picked 3 courgettes and some more Aztec broccoli. Brought in some onions and a small blue green squash.

This is going to look really beautiful @Retired when the plants start to mature a bit!

Just a question, I'm not saying I'm necessarily right, but I always thought there should be a bit of clearance around the base of the plants regarding the slate chippings / gravel, is that not the case? I guess that's mostly for Summer though, when they can get pretty hot.

Regarding what I'm doing today, or will be doing later to be precise, I plan to do a bit of pruning of overgrown branches which are prone to wind damage (mostly roses), tweak the positioning of a couple of plants perhaps and plant 2 hylotelephium / sedum. I would love to mow the lawn as well but I doubt it will be dry enough.
