I've been gradually getting around the garden cutting back, weeding and mulching. I planted 6 of the perennial plants I bought recently, which took longer than I thought because of the clay soil. I mixed a lot of compost in with it. I've also planted 30 violas in beds in the last couple of days. I love violas.

I was upset when we got back from the SM this morning. The roses in my round bed were all shooting nicely with baby leaves and a deer has got into the garden and eaten a lot of them. Its little hoof prints were in the bed. I think it was most likely early this morning and I probably frightened it when I came downstairs to make coffee and drew the curtains and switched on lights. Luckily it hadn't been to the top end of the garden. We haven't had a deer since I frightened one and OH raised the height of the top of the garden fences. The garden is on a bit of a slope so there is a top and a bottom. I spent an hour putting up the electric fence across the bottom. The fence is a nuisance because it's between the barn where I keep the car and gardening stuff and the garden.

I sowed mangetout peas today too, in pots. Every time I sow peas or beans in the veg garden something eats them. Anyway I haven't started the veg garden yet.

I sympathise with you @luciusmaximus , nothing worse than noisy neighbours.
@Busy-Lizzie ,what a shame about your roses. Hope they recover okay.

Today I removed a large leaved variegated ivy (Herdera Gloire de Marengo) which I’ve been growing on a half obelisk against the fence in my upper garden. After several years, I decided that the green was too blue for my liking (fussy ), it’s boring, and the marks that the sucker pads made on the fence were getting out of hand. So it had to go! I dug it up, rearranged the sandstone blocks at the foot of the fence to keep four legged intruders out and repainted the fencing where it had been marked. I have ordered a Clematis Hagley Hybrid to replace the ivy. I then moved a Euonymus Green Spire into the border where I removed a bamboo recently, to get some upright evergreen interest. Finally I removed the dead leaves from three Seslerias, just using my hand. Last year I cut them to ground level, which was a mistake as they took a long time to regain their dome shape. Lesson learned! They are nice, small, evergreen grasses, ideal for filling gaps in shady areas.

@CarolineL The year after I subscribed to AGS (2023) was when the magazine went digital, agree about the trips I'd never have got that much time off work, they also forgot to remind me to resubscribe so that was that.
I think if I was looking to join anything else it would be the SRGS, there website has proven useful over the years.
Off to the Alpine show at Rosemoor on Saturday, will probably pick up some AGS seeds there.

It’s Spring tidy up here. Filling the bins and compost bins at pace. I’ve applied for a second garden bin so fingers crossed. I still have a full builder's sack from last year to chop up and sort between bin and compost bin. I should do that today really…

Potted-up some Spring bedding for the patio pots (Violas, Bellis etc) and trimmed and refreshed my potted Pelargoniums which have survived the Winter with just the protection of the back ‘porch’ area.

Ok I had two builder’s bags - so the majority of one is in the bin and the bottom of it has lush compost! Win. The other is not as rotted down so I might shred some and wait for more bin room for the rest. I’ve swept and tidied the dumping ground by back gate where one bag was.

                  So
                  many
                  pots.

I'm just doing pretty much nothing although I'd like to, the veg patch is ready the greenhouse is warming up, but cant think of anything that needs doing as its still early.
I dont like this time of year because I know there will be lots to do in a month or so and it all kind of needs doing at once.

After yesterday’s digging, lifting, painting and planting all the gardening I’ve done today is to pot the three Dahlia tubers that arrived this afternoon. Good sized tubers from Peter Nyssen, well packed and competively priced, plus a good range of stock. Other suppliers are available .

Which ones did you choose, @Plantminded?

I have purchased some Impatiens today. A new type, AFAIA. I hope they live up to the picture. All listings everywhere on the net are using the exact same one, so hard to tell if it has been "enhanced".

                          Pardon our interruption...

 Not sure why the link has come out as "Pardon our interruption". It's an ebay listing.
