Here it is "para a praia" which is beach ... same/similar for Spanish I think ... and obviously beach for America.

What do the English say who live at the coast? When we were on the IoW we said beach. Admittedly, when in Bucks we might have said coast but probably IoW, Brighton, Yarmouth, etc.

Well, having grown up next to the yacht club, we called it the beach! Also interchangeable with 'coast' if travelling from further away

We lived by the beach and always called it the beach. We told the kids it was only for the visitors, the same as the funfair that was there all summer!
A bit like the ice cream man who only plays his chimes when he has run out of ice cream.

I know if you live there or are there already that bit where the water comes up is the beach.
But when someone in the middle of London sets off for Soufend and makes a statement like "we are going to the beach" just sounds like a line directly out of Neighbours.

I think it depended on how far you were from the sea/beach - and how old you are. As we didn't live near the coast it was always 'going down the seaside' - or more often 'daan Sowfend' usually by the 'sharrabang' (charabanc) :old: :heehee:

Definitely beach for us when we were young....it was literally at the end of our road when we were up in Blackpool. Although we live very near the coast still down here we tend to just use place names now as we have so many to choose from...my fave being Sandbanks.

Too windy to do any serious gardening today. I am making up a new shelf for the outside of the workshop/potting shed door. The old one was thin ply and warping. I put the shelf up as I was always juggling with the keys in one hand and tools, plants or flower pots in the other.

I emptied the second Potato Bag, enough for two meals plus.
Todays dinner is new Pots with real Butter and something else, not decided yet.

Apart from the usual watering I tied in the tomatoes that seem to be growing in front of my eyes. I repotted a lot of chillies and used 160 litres of compost. Lugging the bags of compost around, washing out all the pots and storing them and returning the chillies to the greenhouse was enough to make my back ache and wouldn't have been possible without being able to sit whilst repotting. I also wound in some of the runner beans that are now well over 8ft. Some others, sown and planted at the same time are only 5ft high.

In Spanish beach is 'la playa' which is used as much as 'la costa' the seaside or coast.

We always called it the sea side, which was Weston Super mare.
This morning picked some more fruit and this afternoon potted on 5 rose cuttings that's doing well and potted on a blueberry in it's final pot.
