When I was gardening at Rushgrove House, Woolwich. I would often dig toads up in the kitchen garden. Thankfully I never killed any.

At home, I'd laid some crazy paving near the front door. When clearing the paving ready for a outbuilding to be built, I found several toads asleep in hollowed pockets.

Another time in my greenhouse. I'd planted my collection of cacti etc into a mixture of sand and grit to a depth of about six inches. I was shocked one day to discover channels ploughed in between the plants. Brushing the mixture back, I found the same scene for a few days. Eventually I found Mr Toad amongst some pots on the floor. I have no idea how Toady managed to climb onto the stagging. There is always something new to learn.

For years a Toad has lived top of this garden, about 20 mtrs away. I made a hole between the roots of a large tree stump, with two old housebricks to climb on... if it rains too much. Recently a young one sits under the kitchen window, under a piece of plywood which catches the late afternoon sun. This has red'ish eyes but some have the ordinary neutral colour apparently.

(No photos as can't use Xenforo for some reason)?
