I had just as hard a day. Being retired, I like to keep busy, nothing I do is that important, 'cept play golf three times a week, (weather permitting). But my days apart from gardening if it's dry, (that's not that important), is filled with trivia, like watching my Japanese koi, playing my vinyl jukeboxes, my tenor sax and leccy piano, (not all at the same time!).

The TV documentary presenter Allan Wicker, once did one on a gated community in Florida, where everyone who bought a property had to be over sixty and retired. Between them to occupy themselves, they voluntarily ran the security, utilities, post, fire and emergency medical service etc.

He said it seemed a place where "You get up in the morning with nothing to do and go to bed each night with only half of it done."

    I can identify with that.

Thanks @luciusmaximus Benny was actually my brothers dog but was still at home when he got him as a pup. I used to look after him and he has been a solid member of the family for 13 years. I miss him :(

That's all a very important part of gardening  :heehee:

        As William Henry Davies said:-

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

          Morning lucius :)
No......Nico is forever!! Wonderful little chap. Got him this caterpillar, squeaky, pull thing. Of course he will be spoiled rotten on his birthday....as he is everyday :)

Blowing a gale outside....very windy with reported gusts approaching 70 mph in places. Wet too last night so don't expect to do much in the garden today

I've been in my very cold shed mixing some seed compost.........Equal parts of Leaf Mould, Bought Seed Compost, Coir and a handful of Perlite. I will sow my seeds in the cellar and bring upstairs into the Grow House when the time is right.
My hands were so cold, may invest in a small heater for the shed.

Despite my thinking about not working in the garden earlier this morning, I have spent most of the day so far gathering and mulching with compost. Perfect weather too for it. :)

Got a bit obsessional about compost right now.....incredibly cheap, collect it myself, and nothing better to improve the appearance of beds, borders, veg patch and fruit bushes; also excellent for weed comtrol. Must have moved a couple of tons at least over the past week or two. Will stack some too for use in the spring in the gh and for planting out :)

Have been observing my four mature birch-trees today ; with these gale force blasts they appear to have undergone an involuntary metamorphosis into the 'self-pruning' variety !!

Watered the potted bamboos and treeferns that are currently hiding in the garage and conservatory. It just doesnt seem to rain much anymore. Grey days oh yes plenty of them still , but little rain hence dry bamboo pots in winter :dunno:

Yesterday was a beautiful 26c, perfect gardening weather. Repotted my new yuzu and a few seedlings, topped up the mulch on some beds, weeded and staked tomatoes.

Ended the day with a nectarine crumble made with the last nectarines from our tree and lots of butter. So good.

Your whole post has made me green with envy - the weather, gardening and the food. Freezing cold here but bright sunshine. Far too cold to be gardening - ice patches on the road haven't even thawed.

I thought about laying down more mulch, about pruning gooseberries and cutting back some bushes....thought about it!! Life is too short so I will carry on thinking about those jobs :rasp:
