Brrrr. Clearing and draining garden pool is a cooooold job. I'll wait a little longer yet!
Fixed puncture on wheelbarrow wheel and continued mulching with my cheap but rich compost.:)

I went too Wilko's today, I bought some Roseclear, some grass seed and a couple of carbon steel trowels for £3.00 each. I managed to break the old one I had, putting in all the bulbs yesterday.

I bought two, so that when I'm gardening "I can use the second one until I find the first one."

Actually here in "The Tropic of Trafford" it was very mild today, not at all cold.

Well turns out I couldn't resist sowing some seeds today. I set up my heated matt that I got from the greenhouse company as a gift after they kept sending us the wrong components for the greenhouse. I put some insultation sheeting as a base and a plastic sheet over that. Seems to be working well but I found the thermostat sensor a little awkward to put in place at first.

Anyway....I've sown some Tagetes, Ostrich Feather Asters and some Rudbeckia. I had success with the Rudbeckia and Asters last year and the Tagetes are a first attempt for me (I got Sarah Raven ones in the sale for 50p :) )

Well that seems to have satisfied my gardening craving for today. Far too cold to go outside outside today - we even had a little bit of snow this morning and that hasn't melted in the shade!

Just remembered I also took some cuttings today :rolleyespink: I must be mad but thought I'd give it a go. It was from a big hebe at the front (decided I'm going to get rid of it). Also took some cuttings from a viburnum that needs to come out (but I will be trying to keep it and just move it eventually). I thought there wasn't much to lose and they might do o.k. in the heated greenhouse.

Also sown some Black pansys for the first time ever. I may be going wrong here but the packet said to keep cool and dark (it said it can be sown and kept under glass Feb onwards). Well, it's nearly feb, so Ive sown them in a tray with a lid and put it in an old plastic compost bad and put it in the cold frame next to the house and a brick wall. Is that right?!? Do the seeds not need light to germinate?? :th scifD36:

I believe pansy don't require direct sunlight but still need light in a sense, when I sow mine I leave them on a north facing windowsill. Did you surface sow the seeds as well @Snorky85 ? some say cover lightly others say don't cover :rolleyespink:

Hi @Perki maybe I got the wrong end of the stick then as they wont get any light in the plastic bag

I sprinkled a small amount of compost over the top as per instructions. What do you do?

Gave the small patches of moss on the lawn a dose of iron sulphate. Rest of it looks quite good for the time of the year.

Looked at the Met on-line forecast for tomorrow and it looks like we could get a bit of rain around 2.00pm.
Which probably means it'll rain for most of the day.

I was gong to tackle the rockery tomorrow but I won't hold my breath

I have always kept mine in the dark until most have germinated. I also start them in the cellar which is the perfect temperature for storing white wine at the moment.. brrrr…

I've ordered some pansy seeds that I hope they bloom true to the picture... let me see if I can find that picture...

                  Doesn't it look fun!

My asparagus has now sprouted!!! Well, about 10 have :)

It won't be long before I have every surface covered with seedlings of various sorts waiting for it to get warm enough to start heating the greenhouse.

I can't quite remember how I sowed pansy last time, I think I surface sowed them. I've just looked at two lots of pansy seeds I have and both have different instructions.

You don't need the plastic compost bag over them, the compost is covering the seeds anyway providing the darkness, I always found them a funny plant to grow from seed. The last lot I've grown were frizzle sizzle, I've grown the black one before as well which I really liked .

I've had that experience too. Last year was the first year my Nicotiana had perfume. It was like walking into a wall of it - lovely. For the 5 plus years before that, the seeds, even though they were supposed to be the perfume mix, produced pretty flowers but no scent. I like to have at least a couple of smelly things in the garden. I've got so few warm months that I want to compact as much into my season.

If I won the lottery, I'd get a bouquet of pink carnations sent to myself every week. :)

I've grown the nicotiana sylvestris quite a few time now , not once were they scented day or night. I have more luck with the smaller nicotiana. I love the smell of wisteria and night stocks

Yes, I had super luck with the white ones this last year. I saved lots of seed from them and will be sowing it throughout the summer for successive blooms.

I have tried to grow the tall Carnations and ended up with straggly excuses for flowers. I made sure to order ones that were supposed to have strong stems etc. But no, I keep getting these runts!

Doesn't stop me from coming back for more abuse though :)

I love the look of that orange/black pansy @CanadianLori it reminds me of a tiger!

I grew a pot of night scented stocks last year and they smelt lovely-but they looked an utter straggly mess.

That pansy really caught my eye. It's coming from Veseys Seeds. A PEI nursery. Got a few friends that I've made there. Never been that far east but sure enjoyed their company when they came here.

Yes, mine looked like gaunt scarecrows so this year, I'll start topping them and adding more seed around to fill in keep the procession of smelly things happening. It's a poor man's annual but I love the smell so much :)
