Got back from work early heavy rain again . the sun did appear and dried the back lawn off enough to cut . Cut a few plants away from the lawn and tidied up some of the pots and give them a feed. Turned the compost heaps, this years heap is nice and warm and last years is breaking down nicely futher on than usual I think .

Planted Pervoskia again after my last one was smoothered , in the prosess ended up murdering 4 large allium bulbs  .

Went round to mum to get my canna back after being in quarantine for a few weeks it look well not like the canna I saw yesterday at the GC with the virus.

Yesterday was big bonfire day. It has been so dry here that I couldn't chance lighting it. All the fields of corn and barley have now been harvested and baled and removed. So I was just waiting for some rain to make things a bit safer.

We had a very heavy ten minutes of rain in the morning and a couple of hours after that I started to set up for the bonfire. Hose at the ready and all the trees around hosed down. Hunted for hedgehogs in the heap (didn't find any) and set the paper in the lower reaches of the 8ft high bonfire. The heavens promptly opened again! So I went in for lunch.

After lunch, in the bright sunshine, I lighted blue touch paper and stood back. :heehee: Whoosh!! Flames reaching 10ft above the heap and Mr Robin telling me that there's a fire (three quick cheeps then a pause and then three quick cheeps etc. - I speak robin!)

Hosing trees down for a while but stopped when the rain started again. As it burned lower I started adding adding some of the laurel leaves from the 6ft pile alongside and getting a very satisfying series of gunshots from the oils in the leaves exploding (Mr Robin decided that was too much for him, and flew away). Then I started adding the big branches from the tree we had shortened by about 10ft. The rain decided not to make things comfortable for me so when I had got all the branches onto the fire I went indoors to dry off and change out of my soaking clothes.

A couple of hours later, sun shining brightly, I went to look at how it had gone. A big pile of smoldering ash greeted me so I started adding the contents of one of the two ton bags that needed burning. The bags were full of a mixture of privet cuttings and willow branches (from naturally year long branch fall plus lots of gale debris and dead leaves). After emptying half of a one ton bag my back, neck and ribs were suffering too much from the lifting and dragging to carry on. So I left the fire smoldering with lots of smoke drifting across the fields. I'll check to see how it's going later this morning but won't be able to put any more on there for a while. :noidea:

No gardening for me today - apart from harvesting.

It was but I need to pace myself. :old: I'm busy all afternoon and evening so I shan't have much time today - but might squeeze in some lawn edging.

@shiney that sounds like a lot of debris gone. It's not often I get a sore back but when I do, I get pretty annoyed by the limitations I have to tolerate. So much to do and not enough time for delays!

We aren't allowed bonfires here without a special permit so everything has to go in the brown paper bags which of course means all must be chopped up into pieces less that 18".

I've stuffed a couple more annuals into the garden because they got too big for their pots. Watered everybody and need to figure out how to access the rail of the deck surround which is behind the greenhouses at the side of the house. I have two more solar panels to install up there and the rail is about 10' off the ground and in a narrow space. I don't think the ladder will fit in there. Hope I don't have to crawl over there from the end - I really do not like heights :hate-shocked:

I must stop reading this thread as I feel guilty not actually doing much apart from looking at things and sitting in the sun.:hotsun:
Some of you make me feel worn out just reading about it, I have got a tiny garden, mind.

A satisfying and productive morning but the traffic is a nightmare ...the whole of the UK seems to be here:sad:

Checked out the residential home where my brother now is......fantastic, home from home, like a top class hotel. He is an accomplished guitarist and already has attracted excitement from staff and residents. I think he is in a good place so a big relief :)

6 lawn cuts and 2 hedges cut today. Weather looks bad for tomorrow but at least it all went to plan today.
Striped down my km130r power head and sorted that as it was playing up. Petrol starvation from dirty fuel.
