What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2020

Every Friday morning I take my green bin (kitchen food scraps, indoor plant cuttings), 2 blue bins (1 paper products, 1 plastic and metal) out to the kerb. I am allowed as many of those as I wish. Rubbish is collected biweekly and there is a limit of three bags or you can buy tags when you need extra. Unlimited amounts of brown yard waste bags are picked up biweekly between April and December. And the same days as the yard waste, we are allowed three bulk items. A sofa , an old chair ..whatever. Appliances are picked up for free and by appointment. Not a bad system but as you say, our property taxes are fairly steep so we do pay for it.

 

Dug up a lot of raspberry runners and planted them where i wanted them.

 

Indeed @Snorky85 , it's a Degu and they are seriously cute and make excellent pets. Heartbreak warning: a two weeks old baby who is about the size of a 50p coin



They appreciate fresh grass and love dandelion roots so I can't 4-in-1 my lawns but actually even grow dandelions in a pot. Next summer I'll build an outdoors run for them.

If anyone is interested, some 300 were recently rescued from a breeding farm and I think many are still looking for homes. PM me and I'll give the contact details to the rescue charity.

Aww bless em! They are lovely. I used to have a rescued/unwanted chinchilla but didn't have dogs back then...otherwise Id adopt a couple. How many have you got @Selleri ?

 

We have two old ladies left from the 4 we had some 5 years ago, 4 young ladies from the rescue, and at the moment also a surprise litter from one of the new girls- 9 pups at the last count. The pups will go back to the rescue in a couple of weeks time But we will take the mum back after weaning and possibly a girl pup or two.

We have a very large cage so can house many, and Degus naturally live in big groups. It's brilliant to watch their activities as a group, we call it Degu TV.

I hope the rogue breeder got what s/he deserved, apparently the situation was very very bad. Degus are expensive so there are people who are just making money on them.

 

Cut the last of the old blackberry canes, put them in bags to wait for the bin to be emptied, just got to tie the new canes in but not today .

 

@Selleri it's just awful what some breeders do. Personally I think we shouldnt be breeding them as pets, the poor things. Chinchillas for example can live for 20 years and have very specific needs yet the likes of Pets at Home sell them as if they are hamsters With a 2 yr lifespan. The tiny cages they put them in breaks my heart and the staff dont know how to look after them properly-they were feeding them toxic bird seeds at a local one until I gave them a rollocking about it. And in the summer the shops arent aircon'd and the poor things overheat so easily. Grrr and that's not even mentioning the poor breeding...

Anyway....Gardening...sort of...jet washed the path at the side of the house. Could only do that section as the super powerful petrol jet washer is hard work on the hand and arms. still...quite satisfying...

 

Lovely, productive day today Finally tracked down the rotovator battery charger, cleared the old asparagus foliage (100m x 1m) and used it to get rid of the looming bonfire heap. Strimmed around the agrilac so I can get to the irrigation pump. Rotovated in the polytunnel ready for sowing tomorrow. Then a little light tidying-up of the artichokes. Say what you like about Covid and lockdown, with the unnaturally good weather, the garden's doing well out of it!

 

Back into the pond to clear away the iris and waterlilies.
Id forgotten how painful cold water is on the ole hands.

Soon goes though so all good and the fish will be happy with the extra light.

Been to get a few small straw bales to wrap the tree ferns up for winter soon.
