I, also, don't cover my compost heaps - mine are more horizontal than vertical - but I am quite careful as to what I put on them. As I can't trust the heap to reach a high enough temperature to kill some of the noxious weeds I make sure that they go into the green bin. Grass, leaves, soft stems and cuttings and shredded paper (rarely get any cardboard) go into mine. If there's any horse poo available that would go in too.

Maybe you could train your cats and dog to pee on the heap :heehee: I'm fortunate that we're not overlooked so when I'm working in the garden I don't have to go traipsing indoors to have a pee.

It's surprising how quickly the heap rots down without any hard cuttings. The bigger hard stuff goes on a bonfire, close to the heaps, and the resulting ash (potash - unless you're being a picky scientist :heehee:) sometimes get put onto the heaps. Some of the noxious weeds will go on the bonfire.

It takes about a year for mine to go from this

It's easier to distribute across the heap :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

It makes perfect sense though.. recycling takes on new dimensions.. I think there was something too re deterring deer with male... contributions.... along fence lines... Or was that something from other critters? In the old days that is how they gardened in places like this. No waste!
Just checked and yes re deer repellent, and for garden use, diluted.
Oh and piss is the name of a punk group!

Hi @Morgie and welcome to the forums.
Yes it's best for a compost bin to have a lid so that it doesn't get too wet. I've got those cone shaped ones, they're great. It's best to put layers of green and brown vegetation in like @ARMANDII said and yes putting wee in it is good and rhubarb leaves.

I think they say male wee is better because of how they wee.:heehee:

It's sort of gardening, tidied up the garage to make room for 4x60 ltr of mpc, 1x 60 ltr of ericaesous compost. 2 boxes of rose food and small box of slow release fertiliser that was delivered at 12.30 today.

Well with my enforced holiday I've been measuring up to build a raised border bed out of my old decking, somewhere along the line I've got to dig up a 30 + year old fuschia, (I took some cuttings last year) I'm just wondering how deep do fuschia root?

An invigorating and rewardingly satisfying while out there. Love it when the results are clearly visible immediately! Sorted the "boundaries" of the beds between big gate and gable end of the dwelling. Squeezed out as much space as I could and edged all with the white stones I gathered whenever at the rocky shore. There were just enough! Looks very very good. Sowed a couple of big pots with nasturtium seed saved last year. A while to keep moving as the wind is very fresh. But honour is very satisfied. Oh and found half a packet of limanthus seed. And various other goodies. Next is to ID some of the small plants that are emerging.

                              Deeper than you want!

Two years ago we removed an old 8ft high and 20ft long fucshia and had to dig at least a couple of feet deep to get all the roots out. It worked well :blue thumb: - for a year . It's now back again!
