Yes, it's well worth a visit if you're in the area. They have a winter garden which is hugely popular, a working mill that you can visit and buy the flower if you wish, lots of grounds and summer gardens including a very large walled herbaceous garden and a rose garden and a big house. A typical National Trust property that was gifted to the NT by Lord Fairhaven

      Lord Fairhaven's Garden

The current Fairhavens now live at Kirtling Towers not too far away. We met Lady Fairhaven at her home when she opened her garden there for the NGS for the daffodil season. She's a very nice person. They have tens of thousands of daffs.

Kirtling Tower, Newmarket, Cambridgeshire, CB8 9PA - National Garden Scheme

It's worth a visit to both properties on the same day.

The only downside with Anglesey Abbey is that they've changed their pricing policy. You used to be able to just pay to go to the gardens or the house and gardens but they have now included the full property as a single ticket. This means that if you're not a member of the NT it will cost about £15 even if you just want to see the gardens. To me that sounds exorbitant (doesn't matter to us as we're members) but talking to some younger people they seem fairly happy to pay that sort of money for the visit. :noidea:

Of course, to a grumpy old man everything seems expensive nowadays :old:. It wasn't like that in my younger days! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

After walking around the garden this morning to make note of this weekends jobs that need doing, I noticed the first little specks of colour for the year.

I didn't know whether these Iris bulbs were still viable so put them in a pot outside my front door. They've proved the point I think. :)

And the Primroses I planted last Autumn are starting a nice display too.

Thanks Upsydaisy. :) They're a bonus for me as there were no flowering plants or shrubs in the garden apart from a few Daffodils. It's ex crofting land and has never been planted with anything apart from debris and a Bamboo which is coming out. I'm also looking forward to seeing my newly planted roses in bloom later.

You're right about them being tough @shiney. The area that pot (it's only 2ltr) has been sitting in all winter is sunless all year round and a frost pocket.

Now I know they will survive I'll buy more and plant them in the garden. :)

I do that too @Sheal, plant a few things in places that I'm unsure of the suitability ....sun, shade, clay , wind tunnel etc. I use it as a test and if they survive then I get more.

We have one very long border that runs the length of our garden, it's mostly clay and is shaded by the hedge and if the truth be told it's all planted via such experiments ;) When planting out other areas if I have a few left over I bung them in the 'hit and miss' border:heehee: I then pretend I planned it that way when we get compliments when it turns out looking good:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Gardening is all about trial and error @Upsydaisy and it's great when experiments pay off. :)
