Couple of differences Sheal, Deutzia flowers in spikes , see top right of Upsy's spicy, Philadephis flower right off the main branches. Also the calyces are greyish/brown , whereas in Philadelphus they are green and look like a rosebud.

Oh @glengarry23 that Japonica is absolutely stunning. How do you propagate them please. My Dad has one in his garden and it's huge, in a few weeks time I am going to remove some smaller plants that I want but there are loads of bigger ones that I will need to propagate. So no doubt I'll be hounding you lovely people for advice. Bear with me please.;)

I am delighted. I brought a clump of Agapanthus over from the UK when we moved here in 2001 and sadly lost them in a very wet winter. @roders kindly sent me some bulbs in 2010 which took ... but then disappeared a few years later! I was pleased recently to see some leaves come up and yesterday the first one opened fully! They are in a shady spot in a rockery under the Callistemon viminalis ... I hope they stay now.

Agapanthus has never flowered for me in shade, I reckon even in Portugal they need a certain amount of sunshine to do well.

Planted a couple of agapanthus here in my garden in Ireland on the north side of a hill which seems to be too dull for them to flower as well. I even picked spots which I thought would be fairly sunny. They survive but have yet to see one of them flower and even the leaves are slow to pop up in the spring. Maybe they need a longer warm season than I get in the garden here.

Just posted another video of what has started to bloom in the garden today here.

It is not shady all the time, you can see some sun to the right. It probably gets more of our 3000+ hours of it since we had one Jacaranda to the South of it cut down and also the Myoporo to the Southeast cut back. The photo was taken at 4.45pm yesterday when the sun is more Southwest.
