We are wanting to grow some vegetables in our garden and one of the things we are interested in is mushrooms. Can anyone give me some pointers as to which ones are best to buy and is there any special techniques in growing mushrooms?

Mushroom spawn isn't like normal plant seeds, you can't sow it in a outside soil bed. Instead you buy kits containing everything you need to grow on a windowsill. It's years since I last tried, they were more of a novelty when the children were young. They were button mushrooms, these days you can buy all sorts depends what you like.

You can get kits where you impregnate logs with the spawn and you can grow some of the more unusual kinds.
You can Also buy kits where you can grow them in the dark in a shed or garage., or under the bed. :)

Last year I used a kit for growing oyster mushrooms on straw. It worked, but the crop was only a few at a time, not enough for even a decent side portion. Then you had to wait too long for the next batch so you couldn't combine them. Not worth it imho.
