I don't actually see why the accident made the news, unless it was a quiet news day locally.:dunno: Let's face we've probably all seen worse and sillier accidents in the past. As for Gender ability I think there's no real difference.....there's good and bad women and men drivers and possibly only the fact that there are more men drivers than women drivers makes the accident rate look disproportionate.:coffee:

I have a theory about why it is that we unfairly stereotype women drivers as incompetent drivers (and when I say 'we', I am generalising).

Until relatively recently, driving was a very physical manual labouring job, and women, although capable, were seen as petite little helpless things. So when women start to get the same rights as men (and I'm not talking about women's lib, I mean as recently as probably the 1970s when society accepted women as human some years after the law did), women who'd been conditioned to believe that manual work was not for them, were suddenly attempting to vehicles with no power steering, no servo assisted brakes, gears that required you to double clutch on every change, said clutch being another thing that has no servo attached to it.

So while the bloke was building muscle working down the pit or in the steel works, and could therefore manage such beastly vehicles with ease, the wife was less physically strong and would therefore struggle to manage the vehicles, especially in low speed tight manoeuvres such as parking up.

Well that's my theory at least, and I am aware that it is flawed, as young girls were trained to drive tractors during WW2, but its the best I can come up with because lets face it, the womenfolk are as capable as blokes behind the wheel.

Clueless, you're digging yourself a deep hole! :)

This woman here had no trouble in the 70's driving and manoeuvreing (have I spelt that right?) a Ford Granada with no power steering etc.!

I was parked up in Langport when an elderly lady reversed into the space in front of me, hit the front of my car, pulled out & tried to park again & then hit the car again:doh:

I once had a 12 year old (at the time) Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8. Not a bad performer for an average runabout but nothing amazing.

I started to teach wife to drive it (all legal, insured, L's etc). I previously didn't think it was possible to make it wheel spin in third gear.

Well I was involved in a accident last May when a car drove straight out of a side junction while I was on the main road and hit my car in the rear and near side rear wheel arch. The driver told me that looking to the right was unnecessary.........it was a man!!!:dunno:

Not saying I am the best but my father was a Le Mans driver and he owned a race team in the States in the 60s and I spent lots of hours on the track and touring four states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina) in the old F1 days. I think I know how to drive and, in my opinion, can do so better than most men! I can handle cars on ice, snow and in torrential heavy rain and can do three-point turns in a moment.

However, because I was brought up on race tracks I was told a vehicle is a dangerous weapon and you must always respect it. This I then learned when I worked in criminal/personal injury law in the States for ten years.

Edit: I mean handling 6 litre engine cars.
