Loli, RIP Daisy. She had a good life with you :grphg:

After a very successful five hours non-stop (with no time to sit down), looking after the crowd of homeless and disadvantaged, my foot was playing up by the time we got home. I made myself a very nice Naga curry, Mrs Shiney changed my dressing and I was ordered to stay confined to my armchair for at least four hours! Foot feels Ok to walk on now :blue thumb:.

About 30 of them had claimed a space in the old sports hall where they could doss down. There were two rows of old mattresses with makeshift screens between them. At least it was warm for them. All the rest turned up for a good meal, a sit in the warm room, and a chance to chat if they wanted to. Some just watched TV and others chatted quietly.

In another room there were loads of secondhand clothes for them to help themselves.

Everyone was polite and friendly and it felt good to be able to help. Not all were without money. Some were earning in jobs (not normally full time) but didn't have enough to be able to have a roof over their heads. One woman, with a baby, is living in a refuge for battered women but she said the atmosphere is so bad there that she would rather spend as much time as possible at the 'Haven' (the name that they all call the place).

The man, Neil, who was running the place had prepared a fantastic slap up buffet that would have done anyone proud. I was going there expecting to help prepare the food but he explained that the local authority wouldn't allow anyone who hadn't got their food preparation licence to cook the food. They're not even allowed to accept pre-prepared food cooked by anyone who hasn't got the licence. So it's no good cooking something like a cottage pie and bringing it in!

Neil had been cooking the meals and working non-stop for ten days :love30:. All the 'guests' had enormous respect for him :). There were just four 'novices' to help him. Mrs Shiney and myself, a nineteen year old girl and a twenty eight year old young man (he looked about 20) who worked in social media up in the City.

At 11.30 a.m. we're supposed to be going on an hour and a half historical walk of our village led by a historian. I'm not sure Mrs Shiney will let me go . We'll have to wait and see.

We wish you good health and all the best for 2015. :grphg:

Frosty and sunny here. Freezing cold but looks beautiful out there so will wrap up in a minute and take the dogs out for a nice long walk.

Hope everyone had a good Hogmanay and wishing you a lovely New Years Day

                            Aloha everyone,

I hope everyone is recovering from their ailments :grphg:

I'm a bit under the weather today . I did part of the village historical walk yesterday but gave up when my foot started bothering me. Mrs Shiney changed the dressing a couple of times during the day and it seems OK today. :blue thumb: Unfortunately I have one of my chest infections! I'm trying not to breathe in too much as it starts me coughing and my ribs and head are extremely tender from the coughing.

I was supposed to be going to a funeral today but shall have to send my apologies. Also, I've given my apologies for bridge tonight (Mrs Shiney says she knows I'm really ill if I can't make it to bridge :snork:).

What we did of the village walk was interesting. It's very old but few of the original buildings still exist. Some of them that are standing go back 300-400 years. Both Queen Elizabeth and Queen Anne visited the village and some of Oliver Cromwell's family lived here - the Barringtons of Barrington Hall. His aunt, Catherine Barrington, was fined £20 (a fortune in those days) for holding a proscribed religious meeting. Everyone else got fined 5/-

In the 19th C we had six pubs and three breweries in the village and locals could purchase ale directly from the brewery. According to the records, a local could by ale for 1/6d (7.5p) ......... per gallon!!!!

I think I'll go off to my armchair and do nothing apart from feeling sorry for myself :heehee:

                            Have a great day

                            Aloha!
