Corduroy, or at least the one I bought, is largely woven with cotton and I prewashed it to make any shrinkage happen up front but also to see how it came out as I wouldn't want to spend a lot of time sewing something just to find out it was too small after the first wash and also I know what wash settings to duplicate each time.

Prewashing is weird to me as I have always sewn for the home and very few soft furnishings are washed, they are usually dry cleaned when necessary. Sewing clothing is fairly new to me. I have made jackets in the past but not trousers or blouses or tshirts etc. It's a learning curve but keep in mind, I also have a lot more equipment than most so I don't have any challenges in that regard. This is my sewing room and I also have another area with a 2x8' pinnable/ironable surface for laying out the work/patterns and I have a boiler iron system as well as a hydrid steam iron. I have a big advantage over those who have to set up the machine on the kitchen table. DSCN2676.JPG DSCN2674.JPG DSCN2675.JPG

Wow that looks like a dream workshop lori, if only I could sew. I’ve got a machine but need 1-2-1 tutoring to learn properly. Would love to be able to follow a pattern and make a dress or something.

Oh gosh....what a dream!!! I would love a room like that!! I think it would be a lost cause trying to talk hubs round to converting one of our 5 spare bedrooms into a sewing room. At Christmas I removed the sewing table and machine from the dining room to a spare bedroom .....but have noticed it has crept back down!

Are they cushions/ pillows up on the high shelf, or bags of Kapok ( stuffing)?

Can't get over all your spools of thread.....you must have every shade ever made!!
Wish you were my neighbour, you would definitely inspire me to get back into making things....mind you I would still have a problem sourcing fabric.

There are different types of threads. All purpose, upholstery, serging, top stitching, blind hemming and so on.

The sewing part of home stuff is the easy part. The pattern draughting etc need education. I also developed spreadsheets to do lots of the calculating such as how many yards for a panel this wide, this long, this fullness and with this pattern repeat? It will also spit out pricing, a quote and a worksheet for the job. I've been asked to sell it to some but I don't want the hassle of training or offering support so I declined. I used to be a manager in the financial end of the steel industry so applied some of those skills such as spreadsheet mastery to this discipline.

Yes, I have some degrees and I also am president of the workroom association in Canada.

I would have thought that sewing was taught in your schools there?

Sorry, forgot to say, yes those are pillow inserts. One side is poly, the other is feather and those metal things on shallow shelves in the corner are button making equipment.

it was years ago-my mum is fab at making dresses but doesn’t have the time to teach me. She does a lot by eye too rather than patterns.

I was taught how to use a sewing machine at secondary school and made a bolster cushion-that was the full extent of the textiles class! So pretty useless really.

If you can thread a sewing machine, you can do almost anything :)

                          Good morning everyone
It is still fairly dark but I can note there are clouds in the sky- I think. We were told by the guessers that it would be a partially sunny day but I think they are giving the fairy tale version of the weather.

Today I'm on duty to drive someone to their physio therapy at the hospital and then some other errands need doing. I have company coming by for lunch tomorrow and am still wondering what I should make. It's the January blahs that are causing this indecision. I think.

Oh well, time doesn't stop for me so that's good, always something new coming up :)

Have a good day all and please play safe!

@CanadianLori, yes sewing was taught in senior school.I made a soft toy rabbit, baby-doll pyjamas, nightie, apron, petticoat and a tennis dress.
My Mum was a great dressmaker and I did take after her in my younger days ( without the 'great' bit ) I made all my clothes including a fully lined suit to wear to friends wedding. As I mentioned earlier it's the total lack of haberdashery shops in our area that is hindering me now.
