    Aloha everyone,

I had a morning Zoom and then spent ages on the phone to the DWP (Department of Works and Pensions) about Barry's benefits. Forty minutes waiting for an answer and then going through the big rigmarole of why I'm not Barry phoning. They are now getting me officially made his 'Appointee' so that I shall now get all his Benefits mail and queries.

He's been disabled since birth and I have been looking after him for the last 37 years (since his father, who worked for me, died). In December they sent a form wanting a full list of his savings and the bank statements (his savings, what little there is, are in a building society that don't send statements). That's not normally a problem as he goes in on his mobility scooter and gets a print out, doing the six mile round trip in this weather is not on! I then fill in the forms, copy them and send them off.

As he was shielding I wrote to them explaining the problem and asked for a postponement. Today he received a letter saying they wanted everything by tomorrow - by mail. :wallbanging: They also wanted details of his assets (none), his property (none), his partner (none), his dependents (none) etc.

90 minutes later the conversation ended with notes going into his file about this and a postponement recorded. :phew:

I've now cooked a very nice spag bol and shall login for bridge at 5.30 for a 7.30 start. I'm going to relax until then and shall do a quiz on History that I received online today.

    Keep well

    Aloha!

Yes definitely a headache sorting things out on the behalf of others isn't. I am the first port of call and for receiving most of my brother's calls and mail now thankfully.

I spent two days trying to get through to DWP before Christmas and like you had to state my reasons for me contacting them and not my brother. In the end it was agreed that a copy of the document I need to progress in resolving an issue that I am dealing with would be posted within the following fortnight..still waiting. Now trying to summon up the strength to phone them and go through it all again.:wallbanging:

I feel better having a chat to someone about messy stuff like your getting a lot of right now....on here now is good, phone a close friend but on of mine is almost blind now(family genes issue) she loves a good laugh with me and we do have many but I would never want to cloud our relationship as she is on her own mainly and us women can be over sensitive at times....so she is out...another friend who has a holiday home here is great with problems and has done one of those assertive course amongst others and talks more than I do so she is very helpful with her knowledge... we share the Mother nightmare issue also.. so if possible I phone her.
Enjoy your bridge, I am no idea about bridge..chess ok domino's ok tiddly winks very good at them...:heehee:

I have the details of the person I spoke to, what office she is in and the time and date of the email she sent to their other department.

It helps having been an, amateur, consumer advisor in my 'spare' time. :blue thumb: Most of my cases were settled fairly easily but, on average, two a year ended up in court and I won all of them. :paladin: What also helped, funnily enough, was not being a lawyer. I was able to get away with saying things in court that lawyers weren't allowed to say.

Yes I always note names, dates sand depts etc too. Definitely pays to act ' humbly ' and not go in with all guns blazing!! This is the way I have approached every department dealing with my brother's issues, people are so willing to go above and beyond to help if you play your cards right.....no pun intended. You do use cards to play bridge....don't you?:noidea:

Yes, I agree. I'm always polite and friendly (most of the time :heehee:) and this woman was very helpful. It also helped that I have two landlines and I had her on one and Barry on the other, on speaker. He could hear what she was saying and he could give any answers necessary. Prior to covid I would drive into town to his place so that they could ask him things is necessary. Especially for permission to talk to me if they can't find his letter of authorisation. :dbgrtmb:

Yes we're very fortunate in this day and age.
We only have one landline now since we closed down mine and hubs individual businesses, but I have used our Alexa ( and my brother's obviously) to include him in participating in some calls that required some input from him on several occasions now. Doesn't bear thinking about how life would be without all these various methods of communication. We'd either have to write back and forth or go in person!:yikes:
